The Effects of Handicraft Activity-Centered Group Art Therapy Program on Self-Resiliency of Children in Community Child Care Center

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find how a handicraft activity-centered group art therapy program affects self-resiliency of children in community child care center, to verify its effectiveness, and to provide a fundamental material helpful to a clinical setting. As study subjects, sixteen 1st to 3rd year elementary school children who used five community chid care centers in B-gu, A-si were selected. Among the sixteen children, eight were assigned to an experimental group and the other eight to a control group, randomly. The eight children of the experimental group had a handicraft activity-centered group art therapy program once a week. The program consisted of total of twelve sessions (one session: 60 minutes). The eight children of the control group had no separate treatment. A qualitative analysis was conducted to verify the effects of the program. The collected data was applied to SPSS/WIN 20.0 for statistical analysis. Qualitatively, their verbal and behavioral changes related to the sub-factors of self-resiliency were analyzed. As a result, the program significantly and positively affected their self-resiliency. In addition, their verbal and behavioral changes were positive in the session-by-session progress of the program. Therefore, this study revealed that the handicraft activity-centered group art therapy program positively influenced self-resilience of children in community child care center. It indicates that the program is applicable to a clinical setting of consultation related to emotional growth in community child care center.
